Brain markers of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia

In my talk I will review research on the neuronal basis for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia, with focus on functional and structural neuroimaging. Our research is founded on an understanding of auditory hallucinations as mis-attributed speech perceptions, originating in the left temporal lobe, and maintained through aberrant neuronal network interactions, that also include parietal and frontal brain regions. Such a model attempts to explain auditory hallucinations as spontaneous neuronal activity in the temporal lobe that is not inhibited from frontal lobe executive control regions, which incapacitates the patient to adequately monitor and interpret the source of the hallucination. I will also present new data on an attempt to understand auditory hallucinations from studying individuals in the general population experiencing "hearing voices" in a non-psychotic context.
