BBB Seminar: Neil A. Hanley

Hovedinnhold

Human endocrine development; focus on adrenal and pancreas

Neil A. Hanley,
Endocrinology & Diabetes, School of Biomedicine, Manchester Academic Health Science Centre, University of Manchester, UK

Our research group primarily studies aspects of early human development both in terms of physiological understanding relevant to paediatric endocrinology and as a model for regenerative medicine in adulthood. In particular, I will talk on development of the human adrenal gland and aspects of sexual differentiation relevant to congenital adrenal hyperplasia; this involves the realisation that even normal female development includes exposure to potent androgens. Understanding how beta cells develop in the pancreas is informative for considering how they might be regenerated in the adult pancreas as a future therapy for diabetes. This latter work includes recently appreciated mechanisms for the transcription factor SOX9.
