Martime Bergen Law Summer Proogramme

An amazing experience personally, educationally, and professionally!

We have had the pleasure of interviewing former student of Maritime Bergen Law Summer Progamme, Jane E. Blaney. Jane participated in the programme in 2019. Today, she works as an associate at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP, the largest law firm in the state of Minnesota.

Hovedinnhold

How did you hear about the Maritime Bergen Law Programme?

I learned about this program from my law school’s Dean of Students. She knew of my interest in international law and recommended me to attend.

Why did you choose to apply?

I chose to apply to attend the Maritime Bergen Programme because it was an incredible opportunity to be immersed in this area of international law but in education but also practically through the location. Maritime Law is one of the most international forms of law, so learning about it in a city that deals with these issues practically is absolutely key to grasping the key issues of the industry. Also, I had always wanted to visit Norway so this was a wonderful way to do so!

What did you think about the way the programme was organized?

The programme was organized in a way to combine book learning and practical learning. I loved that each afternoon we did a “field trip” to learn about the maritime industry in different ways. This gave us an opportunity to really see how what we were studying applied in real life. It also allowed us to experience more of Bergen in the short time that we were there.

I have maintained friendships that I built on this trip even years later and am so thankful that I had this opportunity to meet them!

What did you find most interesting about programme?

The thing that struck me most was how vast the area of Maritime Law is, and also how unknown it is. There is so much we do not know about the ocean and sea travel so it is an exciting area of law to work in.

Did the programme have an impact on your career, if so, how?

Absolutely! Upon graduation I began working at a large international law firm in Insurance Law. Due to my experience in maritime law from this program, I have become the go-to associate to deal with shipping contracts and contracts that touch on maritime law. This has been especially relevant because of the supply chain issues from COVID and parties’ desire to try to insure such risks.

I also do a lot of work in privacy and cybersecurity and have used my knowledge of maritime law to advise on privacy and cyber issues in the shipping industry. This work is also solely because I was able to demonstrate more advanced knowledge and understanding of maritime law.

What would you like to say to anyone considering applying for the MBLSP in future?

Absolutely go! It was an amazing experience personally, educationally, and professionally. It has already had a large impact on my career and I know it will continue to do so going forward.

Bergen was a fascinating city! It is absolutely breathtaking, and very walkable. The people there are also some of the kindest people I have met. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to show us around.
