BIGCHANGE

Biogeochemical change and detection

Hovedinnhold

MAIN OBJECTIVES:

BIGCHANGE will utilize biogeochemical tracers to detect and contextualize climate changes and feedback processes of both present and past times. Ocean circulation has exercised a fundamental control on atmospheric CO2 through geological time, and is essential for maintaining the ocean's capacity for absorbing a significant fraction of our fossil fuel and cement production CO2 emissions. In BIGCHANGE will characterise the Atlantic carbon cycle and determine principal forcing factors during 4 climate states: the present, the recent past, past interglacials and the mid-Pliocene. The first two will constrain current baseline conditions and the last two will constrain likely circulation and biogeochemical responses during warm climate conditions, and their detectability.
