Seminar

Applied geophysics and electromagnetic fields on land, at sea and underground.

Hovedinnhold

Dear Colleagues,

We are very proud to announce that Andrei Swidinsky from the Colorado School of Mines will give a Seminar on Applied geophysics and electromagnetic fields on land, at sea and underground.

Date: 20th June
Time: 11:00 - 11:45
Room: 2160 (Strat Pal)

Biography
Andrei Swidinsky received his original graduate training in marine electromagnetic methods for offshore hydrocarbon exploration at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Nigel Edwards‎.  Upon finishing his doctorate at the start of 2011, he moved on to the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (Geomar) in Germany for a two year postdoctoral fellowship on the topic of geophysical joint inversion.  Since 2013 he has been an Assistant Professor at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Department of Geophysics.  His research interests revolve around the development of novel electrical and electromagnetic exploration methodology, including its integration with other geophysical tools such as gravity, magnetic, and seismic methods.  He teaches a variety of courses on electrical and electromagnetic exploration techniques, ranging from introductory undergraduate classes to those at the advanced graduate level. He also directs the CSM Geophysics Field Camp, a world-class four week comprehensive field course.

Abstract
The Electromagnetic Resource Exploration Group (EMREX) at the Colorado School of Mines focuses on many aspects of applied electromagnetic methods in geophysics.  Problems in which we are currently involved include the effect of steel oil & gas infrastructure (such as casings and pipelines) on controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) surveys, marine mineral exploration‎, powerline contamination of airborne electromagnetic data, magnetic storm hazard assessment for electric power grids, and look-ahead geophysical methods during underground tunneling & construction. This talk will describe ‎these and other activities within my research program, as well as provide a general overview about the Department of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines.

Best regards,
Thilo
