Hovedinnhold

"Thaumarchaeota range among the most dominant microbial lineages in many environments. Their abundance and capability to oxidize ammonia makes them major players in the global nitrogen cycle. Deeply branching clades of Thaumarchaeota seem to be represented by species from hot environments, suggesting a thermophilic ancestor for the phylum. We have assembled the genome of one of these thermophilic organisms. A comparative genome analysis provides key information on the process of adaption to mesophily and niche diversification in Thaumarchaeota, and helps to decipher the origins of ammonia-oxidizing metabolism in Archaea."
