Stromal-tumor cell interactions in lung cancer

Recent global gene expression studies have revealed that many genes that are differentially expressed or prognostic for poor survival in lung cancer encode either stromal matrix proteins or molecules that modulate stromal-tumor cell interactions. Our laboratory previously identified integrin alpha 11 (α11) as such differentially expressed genes. The α11 protein is expressed mainly by the tumor-associated fibroblasts. Using co-implantation strategy, we have demonstrated that α11 expressed in fibroblasts significantly modulates growth of lung cancer cells. In this seminar one of the mechanisms that mediate this effect will be discussed.
