The seminar was held at the wonderful Solstrand hotel. Stener Kvinnsland, chair of the board of the Trond Mohn Foundation, opened the seminar with an inspirational speech and the wise words: “The only thing you can’t miss in life… food”. Afterwards, professor Grethe S. Tell guided us through the impressive Hordaland Health Study (HUSK), which has been going on for almost 30(!) years. Professor Reijo Laaksonen travelled all the way from Finland to hold an exciting presentation on lipids and cardiovascular disease, where he emphasized the importance of ceramides. Several PhD candidates and researchers from UiB presented their ongoing work in the fields of nutritional epidemiology, malnutrition, dietary quality and obesity. Finally, is statistical significance that significant? Postdoc Vegard Lysne led an eye-opening workshop on the use and misuse of p-values in research.

The organizers would like to thank everyone for their contribution, and are looking forward to seeing you at the next Mohn Nutrition Research Lab seminar!

Opening of a new laboratory for nutritional research
MOHN Nutrition Research Lab opened June 11th 2018 as a collaboration between Bergen Research Foundation (BFS), University of Bergen (UiB) and Haukeland University Hospital (HUS).

“We will do research on both obesity and undernutrition and investigate how this can be treated in the best possible way”, says Professor Jutta Dierkes, Department of Clinical Medicine, who is the chairman of the new laboratory.

The chairman of BFS, Stener Kvinnsland, was present at the opening, and he pointed out the paradox of nutritional research as a neglected field in medical research, despite that nutrition affects everybody. The opening of the nutritional research lab underlines the positive trend in nutrition research that has occurred the last few years. “Nutritional research is extremely important”, he says.
