The Spectacular Favela: Violence in Modern Brazil
The Department of Social Anthropology invites all interested to a conversation with anthropologist Erika Robb Larkins on her work on violence and inequality in Brazil. Larkins currently works at the San Diego State University, and will talk about her book, The Spectacular Favela (2015), which offers a rich ethnographic examination of the political economy of spectacular violence in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela.
Based on more than two years of residence in the community, the book explores how entangled forms of violence shape everyday life and how that violence is, in turn, connected to the market economy. The book tells the story of how traffickers, police, cameras, tourists, and even anthropologists come together to create what Larkins calls the “spectacular favela.”
Tomas Salem, PhD fellow at the department will guide the conversation.
