Practicalities 2024

Practical issues in preparation of Staff Mobility Week 2024!

Hovedinnhold

Accompanying persons

In general, we advise against bringing someone along with you for the staff training. This will allow you to have focus on the topics, and to have more time to get to know the other people participating at the SMW. We have prepared this programme just for you as a participant, not your family and friends.

We recommend accompanying persons to join you for a weekend instead - taking the opportunity to explore more of region - see: tips for trips.

Arriving

Arriving by plane: The Bergen airport is at Flesland, 20 km outside the city of Bergen. To get to/from the airport to the city:

The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) leaves frequently, and are quite a bit cheaper than the airport bus. (We recommend that you buy a 7-day ticket if you are staying at a hotel outside the city centre). It takes 43 minutes from the airport to the endstop in the city.

The airport bus Flybussen leaves approximately every 10 minutes to/from the city centre during working hours, and slightly less frequently early in the morning and in the evening. It costs approx14 € and you can buy the ticket on the webpage flybussen.no It takes about 25 minutes.

Taxies, which is considered expansive in Norway. If you need to use it, this might be your best option with a max.price: Bergen taxi.

Arriving by train: The train station is in the middle of the city centre. Most things are within walking distance in Bergen.

Bybanen / Bergen Light Rail

Skyss is the name of the public transportation in Bergen. A Skyss ticket is valid on Bybanen, the local train to Arna, local boats to Askøy, Frekhaug and Knarvik, and all buses (except the airport bus). The city of Bergen, including the airport, and all the muncipalities bordering to Bergen, are within the same zone (zone A).

There are two Bybaner - one is going between tha airport and the city (line 1) - the other one from the city to the suburban area of Fyllingsdalen (line 2).

It is NOT possible to buy a ticket onboard the light rail (Bybanen) - you need to have a valid ticket before entering. Tickets are bought at the stops from the ticket machine or using the SKYSS app. This is a link to SKYSS information about tickets

NB! It is possible to buy bus tickets from the driver, but this cost 20 kroner extra than if you buy it in the app or from the machine.

Climate and what to bring

One of the interesting things about living in Bergen is that you never know what weather the next day will bring. In June, the temperature can vary a lot from 30° C and sunny, to rain and 7° C.

It can be a big difference between day temperatures and nigh - so bring some warm clothes with you!

You can check out the weather forecast yourself at www.yr.no.

In addition, we ask all participants to bring sensible shoes. We will invite you to activities, which requires good, comfortable shoes for walking. The cobblestones that cover a big part of the city does not invite for high heels either.

Cost/funding

There is no fee for participating in the Staff Mobility Week. Participants are however responsible for covering their own accommodation, travel to/from Bergen and most meals during the week. Some meals are however complementary from UiB. Every day lunch is part of the programme and Thursday night there will be a dinner in the evening.

Hotels in Bergen (in general)

You may be able to find better prices yourself when you contact the hotels individually. At VisitBergen you may find much useful information about accommodation as well as the city of Bergen in general. Bergen is a rather small city with short walking distances. We recommend a few hotels close by the university and the venue, but there are many more good choices. We advise you to check booking.com and similar booking sights (Hotels) and consider booking a hotel near the airport with good public transport connections to the city center. Magic hotels: Magic kløverhuset, Magic Exhibition, Korskirken and Magic Solheimsviken,  Scandic hotels: Scandic Byparken  Scandic Ørnen, Scandic Neptun and Scandic City, Citybox Bergen and Citybox Danmarksplass

The youth hostel offer reasonable single rooms. There are also a few hotels out by the airport which are within reach of the Light train (it runs from 5 in the morning until approx. midnight). In addition there are Airbnb (the most reasonable might be sharing apt. with several rooms), and hostels:

Midsummer

Sankthans, also known as Jonsok, is a Norwegian midsummer celebration. The celebration of Sankthans has both pagan and Christian origins. It coincides with the summer solstice and is associated with ancient traditions related to midsummer and fertility.

Sankthans evening (June 23rd) is marked by bonfires (sankthansbål). The bonfires were believed to drive away evil spirits and celebrate the longest day of the year.

On Midsummer's Eve, you can pick seven kinds of flowers and put them under your pillow to dream of your future husband, according to folk belief.

In Bergen, the tradition since the 18th century has been to use barrels to build a big bonfire in Kirkebukta at Laksevåg. Since 1903 Laksevåg bueskyttere has been responsible for building the bonfire every year.

(More about Lakesvåg bueskyttere and bueskyttere in general you can read here:  Buekorps - Wikipedia)
