Kvarteret (Student Culture House)

Who are we?

Det Akademiske Kvarter (Kvarteret) is the student culture house in Bergen and one of the country’s most active culture houses. Every year Kvarteret hosts over 1500 events and everything is organized by student volunteers. You do not need any previous knowledge to become a volunteer and we give you relevant training and experience that you can carry with you further on in your career. If you will be studying in Bergen you will have fun times, get discount on food and drinks, and free coffee at Kvarteret!

As a volunteer at Kvarteret you can work

  • as a bartender in our café, pub or cocktail bar
  • as a chef
  • as a part of the crew managing the lights and sound during concerts
  • in a PR-group
  • in a production-group
  • in a DJ-grou
The production group consist of three subgroups: The Quiz-group who plan and host Kvarteret’s Tuesday-Quiz in Stjernesalen every week. The Concept-group who is responsible for the different concepts at Kvarteret, such as our club-concept Tivoli, our pub-concept Mikromandag and “Helhus”.

Why should you join us?

Kvarteret is a great place for international students, because they get to practice Norwegian and meet both Norwegian and other international students - and make new friends from all over the world. The social aspect is important to us, and there are lots of both formal and informal social events throughout the semester. Through being a volunteer at Kvarteret you get to try something entirely different and it’s a great way to take a break from studying.

Every Monday throughout the semester we arrange ”Mikromandag” which is a concept in our pub Grøndahls, where we have student-friendly prices on our beverage selection. This includes a wide variety of products from both local and international breweries. Grøndahls is open every monday from 17.00.

Tuesday is our regular quiz night!

On Wednesdays we have a concept called “Bobler og brus” which translates to “Bubbles and soda”. This event is from 18.00 every Wednesday in Stjernesalen, and there will be a DJ playing chill and feel-good music.

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and Buddy Bergen

Who are we and what do we do?

ESN Bergen is part of Erasmus Student Network (ESN), the largest non-profit student network in Europe. We work to advocate student exchange and to foster an international student environment. We do so by integrating international students into the local community through social events, buddy program and Social Erasmus.

How can you join ESN Bergen?

You can join by:

  1.    Participating in our events
  2.    Be a part of the Buddy program
  3.    Being an active member in one of our committees
  4.    Have a board position

You can join one or more of the options above, if you want to.

(1) About our events

Our events are open for all students (except from our Buddy events that requires you having a Buddy). No membership fee is required to participate on our events. Buying an ESN card can still be an advantage. Typical events are Hansafest, students trips to Lapland, quiz, hikes, trampoline park and board games night.

(2) The Buddy program

Through Buddy Bergen you can be introduced to a new culture and perhaps even a new language by signing up as a foreign Buddy here: https://esnbergen.broaddy.com/register/international. You will be matched with a local Buddy that will show you around in Bergen and together you can participate to the Buddy Events.

(3)  The committees

There are four different commitees you can join:

Event committee
Organize events for everyone and makes sure they run smoothly. This committee is the biggest, and is excellent for people who are interested in organizing events, brainstorming ideas and are dedicated to make the semester fun and exciting for students through well-planned events.

Buddy committee
Be in charge of running our buddy program and create buddy events. This is for you if you have teambuilding spirit, enjoy creating and organizing events, and are interested in improving the Buddy program.

Social Erasmus committee
Has a focus on making a long lasting social change in society through volunteering activities. Throughout the semester there are some typical Social Erasmus events such as cat cuddling and language cafés, but the big project is the Social Erasmus Week, that is arranged once every semester, which aims to involve international students into participating in social and voluntary activities in their host countries. For this committee we are looking for students that have an interest in charity work and in seeking out volunteering opportunities.

PR committee
Is making sure to promote all events in social media and to make promotional material.

(4) The board positions

All board positions except of the President, are possible to apply on. Here is more information about the different positions: http://bergen.esn.no/becoming-member

Why should international students join ESN Bergen?

ESN Bergen works under the principle of "Students Helping Students," where volunteering gives opportunities for growth and self-development. In ESN Bergen you can meet your future friends, both local and international students. We emphasize having an open and inclusive environment where members can learn soft and hard skills. Additionally, we offer a network with many opportunities abroad.

Have any questions?

You can either send us a message to our Facebook page ESN Bergen or an e-mail to president@bergen.esn.no for general inquires, or to the buddy@bergen.esn.no for questions about the buddy program.

Hulen (Student concert venue)

Who are we and what do we do?

Hulen is a concert venue located at Møhlenpris in Bergen. Hulen is one of Northern Europe's oldest club venues, first opened in 1969. Hulen hosts concerts with both world famous artist and local up-and-coming acts. The venue is entirely run by volunteers, most of them students in the age group 18-30.

Why should you join us?

Over the years there have been many exchange students volunteering at Hulen. Exchange students are always heartily welcomed at Hulen and deeply missed when the semester is over. Working at Hulen will give you contacts and you will make new friends. In addition to accessing all of Hulen's concerts free of charge and getting access to guest list spots for other concert venues in Bergen, Hulen throws volunteer parties once a month. You'll also experience the 17th of May, which is both Norway's constitution day and Hulen's birthday!

Tenants Union Fantoft (TU Fantoft)

Who are we and what do we do?

TU Fantoft is a student organisation who arranges events, and consists of the residents' contact people at Fantoft student housing. We organise many different types of events, like movie nights every Monday, bingo, quizzes, tournaments and parties. Tournaments include, but are not limited to, beerpong, pool, chess, ping pong and fussball.

You do not have to be a volunteer to participate in any of our activities, we welcome all students in Bergen to come and have a good time with us.

Why should you volunteer at TU Fantoft?

Volunteering at TU Fantoft is a great way to be part of a close group who has a lot of fun together, where the members are from all over the world. This gives you a chance to meet new and interesting people from both Norway and the world. As a volunteer, you will work at our club, Klubb Fantoft, which is the common area at Fantoft that can be used by all residents during daytime. You will also get a written recommendation from us when you are done. This shows that you have been part of working with the biggest organisation of its kind in Norway.

The biggest job however, is to keep a good social environment here in the student city with events for keeping people happy and entertained!

Have any questions?

If you have any questions, we are at Klubb Fantoft most of the time.

You can also contact us at our Facebook pages: https://www.facebook.com/TUFantoft/.

If you have questions for the community at Fantoft, we have a Facebook page for the residents where information about events and general information is shared: https://www.facebook.com/groups/964224213757939/.

How to register as a member

If you want to join our team, you can register in the beginning of the semester through a link, which will be shared on both the Fantoft Facebook page and the TU Facebook page within the first two weeks of the semester. You are also welcome to send us a message on Facebook.
