Hovedinnhold

October 10th, on Frithjof Nansens birthday, Elin Darelius, at University of Bergen and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, had the honour of holding the Nansen Memorial Lecture at the Norwegian Academy of Letters and Sciences.

"This is probably the first – and last – time I give a lecture in a long dress and high heels," says Darelius of the experience.

The lecture "From cold outflow to warm inflow – Norwegian Oceanographic Research in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica" is the most recent in a yearly tradition, founded on Nansens 100th birthday in 1961.

She enters a long line of prominent lecturers, like Helge Ingstad, Thor Heyerdahl, Thorvald Stoltenberg and Håkon Mosby. Everyone giving the Nansen memorial lecture gets the Nansen Medal – she’s the 55th lecturer to receive one – but only the forth woman.
