Latin America and the Caribbean in the 21st Century
H.E. Ulises Canchola, Mexico's ambassador to Norway, gives his reflections on the importance of Latin America and the Caribbean in the contemporary world.

The region of Latin America and the Caribbean is taking on new importance in the contemporary world, particular in current global affairs. Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, now strongly argues that "that Europe must deepen its ties to the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean".
In the current global context, arguably, faced with unprecedented challenges, international cooperation and understanding among people and cultures is more crucial than ever. How does the current trend of challenges affect this region of the world? What can, and should, be the response from Latin America and the Caribbean in these circumstances? How does the current world and the region, appear from the viewpoint of Mexico?
The forthcoming Spanish presidency of the European Union will put emphasis on stronger collaboration with Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union. What should this mean in practice? What are the limits, and the opportunities, in such an endeavor? Will Latin America and the Caribbean, once again, be the battleground for the world’s superpowers and economic interests?
In his lecture, H.E. Ambassador Canchola will reflect on these and other questions from his position as an experienced diplomat.
The lecture is organized in cooperation with the Department of Comparative Politics and the Department of Foreign Languages.
ABOUT THE AMBASSADOR
- Ulises Canchola has been with the Mexican Foreign Service since 1993.
- He is a tranied lawyer from National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
- A multilateral diplomat with experience in New York, Vienna and Geneva among his postings.
- Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran (2014-2017).
- Mexico's ambassador to Norway since 2019.
