Pancreas Research Group
The pancreas secretes digestive enzymes and is at the same time a hormone-producing organ that regulates glucose metabolism. Our research group focuses on the molecular mechanisms involved in development of pancreatic disease.

The pancreas serves both exocrine and endocrine functions in the body. Most of the organ’s mass consists of exocrine tissue that produces digestive enzymes and delivers them to the alimentary tract. The endocrine cells are found as islets of Langerhans, which are dispersed throughout the pancreas and serve a fundamental role in regulating glucose metabolism.
Our research group is interested in molecular pathology, i.e. molecular mechanisms involved in disease development. We are studying several disorders that affect the pancreas:
- Inherited (monogenic) diabetes
- Congenital hyperinsulinism of infancy
- Pancreatic cancer
- Exocrine pancreatic dysfunction/chronic pancreatitis
