Maria Omsland had also in spring term 2015 a 6 months research stay at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the USA where she was part of the research group of Genoveffa Franchini at the Animal Models and Retroviral Vaccines Section, National Cancer Institute. There, Maria investigated cell to cell communication in connection with adult T-cell leukemia (ATL).

She defended Friday February 3rd 2017 her thesis “Investigation of the intercellular structure tunneling nanotube (TNT) in leukemia” at the University of Bergen. Main supervisor was PhD Vibeke Andresen and co-supervisor was Professor Bjørn Tore Gjertsen.
