Service declaration pertaining to the 2-year master’s programme

UiB offers a large number of postgraduate study programmes leading to the master’s degree. The master’s programme is a two-year specialized study programme that builds on the bachelor’s degree. It entails two years of further study within the subject that you chose earlier as your specialization. Emphasis is placed on your own individual effort in the form of a major written assignment, problem solving and active participation in your own learning. The master’s programme leads to a master’s degree.

Duties and responsibilities of the University relating to the 2-year master’s programme:

• To recognize relevant prior education
• To ensure that the master’s degree programme offered has an academic foundation, valuable learning outcomes and enables academic concentration and development.
• To provide good information about the master’s study programme, guidance and contractual stipulations.
• To issue a diploma, including an international “Diploma Supplement” after you have completed the programme and satisfied the requirements for your degree.
• To actively integrate you in an academic environment with a supervisor(s) and fellow specialists in the field of study
• To provide you with an opportunity to participate in relevant seminars
• To provide you with individualized training and supervision
• To ensure that the intentions of the master’s contract are complied with, by seeing to it, for example, that the supervisor and academic department follow up on contractual obligations
• To ensure that there are procedures by which to get help when needed
• To provide information about leaves of absence and absence schemes

The University expects you as a student to:

• Comply with applicable statutes and regulations
• To validate the individual study plan Part II for the master’s programme by, for example, entering into a master’s contract with the faculty, a counselling services agreement with the department, and completing semester registration.
• Follow up the provisions of your contract (individual study plan, counselling services contract) rights and obligations, including applying for a leave of absence if you are planning a a break from your studies

The University advises students to:

• Take advantage of your opportunity as a master’s degree student to do concentrated work in your area of specialization
• Be active and take the initiative in relation to your advisor and academic environment
• Begin as early as possible to identify issues, theories and methods for your master’s thesis
• Seek help from administrators in the department if you encounter problems in your master’s degree work that cannot be resolved in consultation with your advisor
