The main research of professor Johannessen has been directed towards reproductive biology and recruitment studies of fish. His main interest is field oriented and concerns population biology of herring and processes and mechanisms involved in  maintaining population structure. Processes governing selection of spawning sites, spawning behaviour, migrations and early life history are integrated components of this work. His research is recently linked with studies on the local herring population in the marine ecosystem “Mare Minimum” in Lindaaspollene, Nordhordland, western Norway.

Prof. Johannessen  has also expertise in fisheries ecology of the northeast Atlantic and fish population biology in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea.
