The artistic researcvh project "Illuminating the Non-Representable" is coordinated and led by professor of illustration, Hilde Kramer, at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen, Norway.
The project explores representation and the narratives of "us" and "the others" and the transformative role of illustration in modern communication. This project consists of three symposia and three illuminations (three illustration/design projects exploring different aspects of communication challenges). The artistic research unfolds in the symbiosis between the symposia and the projects. A call was sent out in October 2023 for publication by September 2024: https://www.illustrationresearch.org/booking-current-cfp
Hilde Kramer koordinerer det tverrfaglige kunstneriske forskningsprosjektet Illuminating the Non-Representable:

International congress "Jewish Cultural Heritage: Practices, Perspectives, Challenges"

Illuminating the Non-Representable Symposium 1: Transposition as Artistic Practice 2020

århundre er hun allment anerkjent over hele verden.

DES310 23H / Designpraksis 1 - Avdekking
The aim of the course is to prepare students for work on their own master's project.
The subject must convey an understanding of specific investigations and precision of the further project work, in order to uncover, clarify, expand or refine key questions.
Contents:
The study covers the topics
1. Background and motivation, including the project's social relevance
2. Main questions and objectives
3. Project process with progress plan for implementation
4. Assessments related to resource use and form of presentation
The students carry out a preliminary project with investigations through design. Depending on the individual master's project, the investigations and experimentation may be related to materials, processes, scaling or other conditions.

Illuminating the Non-Representable Artistic reseach project supported by NARP (2020-2024)
Er dette et menneske?
This project explores new methods to prevent racism and antisemitism among young people. It transposes the workshop-based methodology developed in a pilot project in Łódź, Poland. The new project treats the fate of Norwegian Jews deported from Trondheim in 1942. The exploration of drawing as a tool for learning will continue in this branch of the project. Is the message altered when a site-specific methodology is used in a new place; how does that affect the culture semiotic aspects?

Non-Book and the Semiophor
This project is a continuation of artistic research in Łódź, Poland during the period 2016 to 2019. It explores innovating book design approaches and challenges our expectations of what reading is. Illustration as tangible objects is another central aspect explored. Holocaust teaching and mediation has since the end of WWII developed certain common design features and color combinations. May new design practices make us understand forgotten or unseen aspects of what happened? May the site-specific historic events teach us something universal - to prevent new genocide from happening? The experimentations take place in Bergen, Norway and in workshops in Łódź, Poland. It is planned to be concluded to be part of the 80th commemoration of the children from Litzmannstadt ghetto in Łódź 2022.
Development of printing technology and book design has lifted the two-dimensional illustration found in conventional visual literature to a gradually increased three-dimensional existence, such as in tactile books and artist books. What happens when an illustration as a visual and tactile object abandons its placement on the surface of the paper in a book to become an independent semiophor?
The term semiophor ( Semiophor ( Alt Gr. Σημεῖον semeion , character ',' signal 'and φορός Phoros , carrying') was introduced in 1988 by the French-Polish historian Krzysztof Pomian. The term emphasizes the property of an exhibited object as a special sign bearer whose meaning first emerges from the context of the museum (Pomian, 1988).

Illustration as Sound
This project examines illustration executed outside its traditional realm. Accepting the obligation to operate in the service of an idea and to communicate something particular, the project seeks to identify a specific illustration methodology and constituted knowledge, and investigate these through the medium of sound, beginning with central topoi in visual storytelling such as ‘character/ actor’, ‘scenography/ environment’ ‘narrative images' ’dramaturgy’/’plot’ and 'style'. May the transposition lead to new understanding of the field of illustration? The mediated content is the layered history of a small suburban place of south east Norway, Momarken; an ancient market place and arena for horse racing, that had a near escape from becoming the last Nazi-German concentration camp built on European territory.
