Stefan Koelsch (Kölsch) er en hjerneforsker og bestselgende forfatter som ble rekruttert av UiB i 2015 som Toppforsk professor. Hans primære forskningsfelt er nevrovitenskap og eksperimentell psykologi. Han er kjent for sitt omfattende interdisiplinære arbeid og har medforfattet publikasjoner med nevrologer, immunologer, psykiatere, fysikere, filosofer, musikologer, litteraturvitere og psykolingvister. Hans ISI h-index er på 50 (70 i scholar.google), med gjennomsnittlig >65 siteringer per artikkel.

Prof. Koelsch beskriver sine forskningsinteresser som følgende: “Jeg er interessert i hvilke hjerneprosesser som gjør oss glade og friske, samt triste og syke. Jeg har en personlig tilknytning til musikk, som tidligere musiker selv, og jeg er spesielt interessert i hvordan musikk kan støtte opp under humørregulering, sosial tilknytning og selvmotivering. Jeg er også interessert i hvilke terapeutiske effekter musikk har på lidelser og sykdommer, spesielt nevrologiske sykdommer og psykiatriske lidelser. Min forskningsgruppe arbeider for øyeblikket med en omfattende studie finansiert av Forskningsrådet som undersøker de terapeutiske effektene av musikk og fysisk aktivitet i pasienter med Alzheimers sykdom, mild kognitiv svikt og subjektiv kognitiv svikt. Andre nevrovitenskapelige prosjekter i min gruppe undersøker de nevrale korrelatene til emosjoner, læring og prediktive prosesser.”

Stefan Kolesch er også en forskningsmedarbeider ved Max Planck Instituttet for Human Kognitiv og Hjerneforskning i Leipzig (Tyskland)
