Samandrag

In this talk, I will reflect upon theoretical assumptions of systems neurology, in a broad sense, and ask if and how they find their way into the clinical encounter with patients. Central to this talk is the notion of the 'patient as a resource' and how this notion imperceptibly alters the notion of 'patients as autonomous subjects', which is premised in international frameworks for research ethics. I will show that these notions refer to two distinct normative frameworks (ethical, legal, and governmental) that assume different ideas about (patient) security and knowledge production. In conclusion, I want to draw attention to a problem of everyday moral perception, of seeing a person’s humanity and suffering within normative frameworks that necessitate the emphasis to be put elsewhere.
