Music in Crisis – Crisis in Music
We are delighted to announce the GRS International Summer School 2021 which will run from June 7th-10th 2021. The event is organized by the Grieg Research School in Interdisciplinary Music Studies in collaboration with University of Agder, our newest consortium member.

The 2020 pandemic has demonstrated the many ways that music can emerge out of, and in response to, periods of individual, local or global crisis. At the same time music itself has been left in crisis by the pandemic, with no area of musical life unaffected, from musicians left out-of-work, music education and music therapy halted, festivals and concert venues closed down permanently. In this course we consider the ways music and the musical lives of individuals, communities, networks and institutions have been affected by this and other forms of crisis. Topics include but are not limited to:
- How has music emerged during this crisis at individual, local, global levels and in relation to social, educational, artistic, financial or health challenges?
- In what ways have musicians, musical institutions, services and organizations responded to the pandemic?
- How have other crises of our time influenced our understanding and use of music?
- How has music been implicated in other times of crisis historically and/or across cultures?
- Music in lockdown and confinement, in isolation or solitude.
- Music at home, kinship and family

ECTS Credits
Ph.D. candidates can gain 3 or 5 ECTS credit points for active, in-person participation during this course and have the option of presenting on the main theme of the course OR on their own research project. These presentations will receive feedback from senior researchers and peers.
