Introduction to implementation science in global health

This course gives a comprehensive introduction to implementation science in global health. The course takes a holistic approach to implementation science with a particular focus on global health challenges in low- and middle-income countries.

Course content

Students will become familiar with concepts and methods within the area of implementation science and develop skills in applying theories, models and frameworks in order to individually develop and defend an implementation science project focusing on challenges of Global Health, and supervise peers in reaching the same objective. Examples will be drawn from ongoing research and from up-to-date scientific literature.

The accumulation of knowledge and its underutilization in practice has become of increasing concern. Both the understanding of evidence-based implementation and approaches to studying implementation will be discussed and explored. The course offers an opportunity for postgraduate students to be acquainted with this emerging field and its application in global health.

A student who has completed the course should have the following learning outcomes:

  • Explain what implementation science and research is.
  • Describe the concept of evidence-based practices.
  • Distinguish between the different "target levels" of implementation science theories, models and frameworks.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of applying certain theories, models and frameworks on different dilemmas.
  • Identify, discuss and assess the pros and cons of different implementation strategies.
  • Undertake supportive peer-supervision and develop skills in providing constructive feedback.
  • Propose, construct and defend an implementation science project within global health including theoretical background, implementation strategy and evaluation method.

Teaching and Learning Methods

This 5 ECTS course is expected to require 125 hours of work: Online lectures (15 hours), online group work (15 hours), individual reading (40 hours) and an individual assignment (55 hours)

Form of assessment

The individual assignment, the oral presentation and the opposition the participant provides to a peer-student will be graded by the facilitators as Passed or Failed.
Participation in 80% of the lectures and group work is required for course approval.

Note that there will be a maximum of 20 participants. If the course is overbooked, priority will be given to applicants who are affiliated with the CIH/CISMAC research school and Norwegian Research School of Global Health
