We welcome Omar Duran to the CSD team

Dr. Omar Yesid Duran Triana joined the Department of Mathematics as a researcher earlier this year and has been working remotely from Colombia. We met Omar to talk about his previous and future involvements within the Center for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics.


Omar, you joined the CSD earlier this year. Nevertheless, welcome!

It is with great honor and appreciation that I thank you all for this opportunity to be part of the team!

Since most of us in Bergen don’t know you well, can you tell us a bit about your background?

I started pursuing a Petroleum Engineering degree at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) - Colombia. Later, I received a Master's and Ph.D. degree at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) - Brazil my supervisor was Philippe R. B. Devloo. Afterward, I had the pleasure of performing a postdoc position at Université Paris-Est and Inria-Paris, hosted by Alexandre Ern. The main goal is to devise and implement HHO methods for wave propagation equations in the time regime under an unfitted approach. Thereafter, I had the privilege of joining remotely the team in Bergen and started ongoing research on the invariant modeling of fracture mechanics very closely with Inga Berre, Jan Martin Nordbotten, and Eirik Keilegavlen.

How do you foresee your role within the center?

I see myself as a team player at an early stage of my research work. In the long term, I expect professional development based on interdisciplinary research within the CSD and in parallel becoming a fully independent researcher. Along with that, I foresee myself advising and supporting new team members. Regarding the development of simulation technologies, I search for extending and maintaining the PorePy framework as well as providing support to incoming users.

Can you tell us a little bit about your main research interests – what are you passionate about?

I have researched finite element applications, construction of conformal-H1/Hdiv FEM approximation spaces, reservoir simulation, reservoir geomechanics, hybrid high order methods (HHO), and the implementation of nonlinear constitutive models for rock plasticity like the Modified Cam-Clay. My passion for modeling of multiphysics problems is linked to multiphase flow coupled with geomechanics in fractured media. In the coming years, I'm really looking forward to contributing to this field while having a lot of fun.
