Global Health Anthropology research group meeting 21/10

Welcome to a new research group meeting on Thursday, October 21 from 13.30-16.00. The venue is Overlege Danielsen’s Hus, meeting room 4th floor.


We will continue focusing on the Sociology of Quantification and attach ‘Measuring the unmeasurable - The US Trafficking in Persons Reports’, chapter 5 in Sally Engle Merry’s book The Seduction of Quantification: Measuring Human Rights, Gender Violence and Sex Trafficking. We will also have two interesting presentations addressing related issues in maternal health.


13.30 – 13.45: Brief round of news

13.45 - 14.00: Prof Claire Wendland, University of Wisconsin-Madison, US: Measures, models, and meaning-making: what counts when we account for maternal mortality. A video-recorded Key note from the recent ECTMIH conference

14.00 – 14.45: Kaja Skoftedalen presents her drafted PhD research proposal:  Maternal deaths and ‘near- misses’: An ethnographic study of women’s experiences and perceptions of the safety of facility birth in Tanzania (20 minutes presentation followed by discussion). Please find the proposal attached.

14.45 – 15.00: Coffee break


15.00 – 16.00: Thor Olav Iversen: Introduction to the discussion on ‘Measuring the unmeasurable - The US Trafficking in Persons Reports’
