You may apply for Norwegian Language and culture level 1 (beginner's level):

• Norwegian Language and Culture for Foreign Language Students, level 1 | University of Bergen (uib.no)

The course starts in week 4 (23-27 January 2023) and lasts until week 19 (8-12 May 2023). Lectures will be given Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 14.15-16.00. The course in Norwegian language and culture will be completed with a written and an oral exam in late May/early June.

Required documentation

• Completed upper secondary school certificate / high school diploma
  • Document this with a higher secondary school certificate, high school diploma, and/or documentation of higher education at university level
• Passport or National ID card
• Status as a refugee living in Western Norway

How to apply

If you have a Norwegian ID number, register a MinID user before you apply.

Apply by the application deadline 18 December.

Log in to Søknadsweb, fill in required personal information, and apply for the programme "Language courses for refugees". 

If you do not receive your ID number in time to apply, or experience other issues when applying, please contact us by submitting a query to the admission's office.   

You may apply for the course English for Academic Purposes spring semester 2023. The course will begin in week 8 (20-24 February 2023) and lasts until week 19 (8-12 May 2023). English for Academic Purposes will be completed with a written and oral exam in late May.

Successful completion of the course exams will give you the necessary language proficiency to meet the English language requirement for admission to UiB’s single courses and master's programmes taught in English.

UiB offers a wide selection of single courses to refugees spring semester 2023. These courses are adapted to English speaking refugees. Please note that while single courses may be used as part of a degree at a later point, the courses will not by themselves lead to a degree.

The application deadline for master's degrees starting January 2023 for refugees living in Norway is 1 November. Please contact us at this form if you could not apply before the deadline.  

Most of our undergraduate degrees are taught in Norwegian and requires Norwegian language proficiency. The exemption is a small selection of bachelor’s degrees at the Faculty of Fine art, Music and Design.

If you want to study undergraduate degrees, including professional programmes such as medicine, law, psychology or dentistry, you must be able to document Norwegian language proficiency in addition to other documentation requirements. If you are unable to document all or some of your previous education due to war or other special circumstances, fill out the self-declaration form for refugees (secure webform), and your application will be individually assessed.
