International Conference on Philosophical Practice 2025
On the 12th to the 14th of June 2025, PhD candidate Emil Perron participated in the biannual International Conference on Philosophical Practice.
This 18th edition took place in lovely Zagreb, Croatia where Emil Perron delivered the presentation entitled:
“In anticipation of philosophical practice, Or Michel de Montaigne and the art of conversation”
Philosophical practice is a term for a wide variety of practical approaches by philosophers in applying philosophy to actual dialogue.
Our times seem to give rise to polarisation, confrontation and uncertainty. In what seems an unstable world at times, wanting to find reassuring answers can open the door to false certainties. Dialogue, philosophy and critical thinking in philosophical practice open a much needed room for nuance, reflection, perspectives and understanding.
One of the pioneers in philosophical practice, Lou Marinoff gave a thought-provoking keynote on cautionary tales in our encounter with articufial intelligence (AI).
And Lydia Amir’s keynote was questioning how philosophy can still be seen as transformative by drawing on the western history of philosophy.
The few days in Zagreb was an incredible time that gave rise to wonderful discussions showing how wide philosophical practice spans in such an incredible variety of ways: from philosophical practice used in humanitarian crisis, to philosophical practice with inmates in prison, via one-on-one counselling, group dialogues in hospitals, philosophical dialogue in teacher education, philosophising with pupils and much much more.
"Thank you to the community for enriching exchanges and critical thinking about philosophical practice. I already look forward to seeing colleagues again at the 19th ICPP in Helsinki, Finland, in two years time." Emil Perron.
