Research Council granting millions for equipment purchase
Investment in research infrastructures and technology is costly and requires long-term thinking and planning. The Research Council of Norway has a total budget of 400 million for equipment proposals for 2011. May 10 they announced the allotment of funding for equipment proposals under 30 million. The remaining funding will be granted to more costly equipment purchase proposals, which must complete another two rounds of application submissions.

The Centre for Geobiology (CGB) is involved in one of the proposals that has been invited to continue in the application process. The proposal is entitled: Norwegian Marine Robotics Facility – Remotely Operated Vehicle for Deep Marine Research.
Currently CGB uses a modified industrial ROV (remotely operated vehicle) in its deep sea research activity. Centre leader Rolf Birger Pedersen says that it will open up new possibilities for Norwegian deep sea research if they receive funding to develop a specially adapted research ROV.
