Abstract

The analysis of metagenomics data poses many questions. How to identify the species present in a sample? How to identify the functional content? Which metabolic pathways play an important role? How to compare samples? As sequencing technologies continue to advance, the number and size of metagenome datasets continue to increase. One tool that attempts to support the analysis of metagenomic data is MEGAN, the MEtaGenome ANalyzer, which was developed together with Stephan Schuster at Penn State University. In this talk, we present the MEGAN approach to analyzing and comparing the phylogenetic and functional content of metagenome datasets, and will report on new developments such as the MEGAN-DB database of analyzed metagenomes and a new KEGG module for analyzing pathways in MEGAN.
