The BMG group has the current main projects

I. Acetylcholine receptor in vitro studies
In this project, we study muscle cell cultures and their expression of acetylcholine receptors (AChR). This AChR expression is influenced by various culture conditions and by biomarkers to be identified. AChR expression and clustering is crucial for MG, and processes determining this could be targets for antigen-specific therapy.

II. Correlations between autoantibodies, other biomarkers and clinical aspects
Such correlations have been examined in several patient cohorts, and with wide international cooperation. Characterization of individual patients through biomarker studies lays the basis for personalized therapy. We have a special interest in antibodies against the muscle proteins titin and ryanodine receptor. The work implies development of sensitive and specific tests, collection of clinical information, statistical analyses, and international cooperation.

III. Registry-based studies
Norwegian health and disease registries are unique. We are using the Norwegian Birth Registry and The Norwegian Prescription Registry to obtain information about myasthenia gravis. Further registries could be explored. We plan to seek Nordic cooperation, to increase the numbers and to compare countries. Registry-based findings can be correlated to clinical materials.

IV. Clinical studies
We are involved in work on guidelines and expert reviews regarding all aspects of myasthenia gravis. We are involved in trials and evaluations of new potential immunoactive drugs for the disease.
