What is the best treatment for older adults with NSTEMI or acute angina? This is the research question professor Anette Hylen Ranhoff from the Bergen Geriatric Research Group and collaborators from the University of Oslo sought to answer in a recent study published in the Lancet.
Hovedinnhold
An Open Labeled Multicenter RCT were performed in 16 participating hospitals in the South East Health Region. The patients were randomized to either conservative treatment (medication only) or invasive treatment (including early coronary angiography with immediate assessment for percutaneous coronary intervention, coronary artery bypass graft, and optimum medical treatmen).
Invasive strategies were superior to conservative strategies for reduction of composite events. No differences in terms of bleeding complications were observed.
Alterations in current guidelines and treatment of older adults are believed to be the outcome of this substantial study.
