Asbjørn Grønstad er professor i Visuell Kultur og har særlig arbeidet med spørsmål om etikk knyttet til kontroversielle uttrykk i billedmediene. Han er utdannet språk-og litteraturviter med doktorgrad innen feltet American Studies, og arbeider gjerne med tverrfaglige tema i skjæringspunktet mellom disipliner som filmvitenskap, medieteori, kunsthistorie, filosofi, og litteratutvitenskap. Fra 2008-20013 ledet han prosjektet Nomadikon: New Ecologies of the Image, finansiert av Trond Mohn-stiftelsen. Sammen med Øyvind Vågnes grunnla han i 2010 det fagfellevurderte tidsskriftet Ekfrase: Nordisk Tidsskrift for Visuell Kultur. Grønstad har hatt to Fulbright-stipend (1998-99 & 2017-18) og har vært gjesteprofessor ved University of Wisconsin-Madison (2000, 2001, 2003), University of Amsterdam (2005, 2013) og University of California-Berkeley (2006-07, 2011, 2013 & 2017-18). I 2007-08 var han professor i Visuell Kultur ved Universitetet i Stavanger. Han har utgitt 13 bøker og over 60 vitenskapelige artikler. Hans seneste bokutgivelser er Ways of Seeing in the Neoliberal State (Palgrave, 2021) og Microdystopias: Aesthetics and Ideologies in a Broken Moment, med Lene Johannessen (Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield, 2022).
