Jeg forsker innen eksperimentell partikkelfysikk. Siden 1980, da jeg var sommerstudent ved CERN har forskningen hovedsakelig vært fokusert rundt deltakelse i forskjellige eksperimenter ved CERN. Siden 1995 har gruppen for partikkelfysikk ved UiB (inkludert undertegnede) deltatt i ATLAS-eksperimentet. Vi deltok i konstruksjonen av ATLAS-SCT (SemiConductor Tracker). Senere har jeg  deltatt i utvikling av silisumsensorer i samarbeid med SINTEF MiNaLab, ultratynne sensorer for medisinsk bruk, og strålingsharde pixel-sensorer i '3D' design.

Nå er denne type sensorer klar for bruk i en oppgradert versjon av ATLAS sin spordetektor, kalt ITk (Inner Tracker). Vi skal delta produksjon og testing av sensormoduler basert på denne teknologien, og bygger opp laboratoriefasliteter og testoppsett for dette formålet.

Innen ATLAS har jeg interessert med for Higgs-partikkelen. Jeg Har veiledet MSc og PhD studenter med dette som tema. Først med prosjekter som gikk ut på hvordan den kunne finnes, og senere i studier av partikkelen.

Tema for MSc oppgaver:

1) ATLAS-ITk: Utvikle testsystemer og teste silisium pixel sensorer og sensormoduler. Dette kan inkludere testing i teststråle ved f.eks. CERN

2) Studier av Higgs-partikkelen, spesielt i henfall inneholdende tau-leptoner.
