Jeg jobber med å utvikle matematiske modeller for flyt i porøse media, samt å utvikle teknikker for å løse de resulterende ligningene. Svært mange medier kan oppfattes som porøse, noen eksempler er:

  • Stein og jord, som er viktig for grunnvanns-ressurser, CO2-lagring, geotermisk energi og oljeutvinning.
  • Biologiske medier: Store deler av kroppen kan sees på som porøs.
  • Industrielle anvendelser: Brenselceller, bleier.
  • Havis, med stor betydning for klima og aktiviteter langs kysten.

Selv om anvendelsene er vidt forskjellige, har de til felles at de kan beskrives med de samme ligningene, og innsikt oppnådd i et fagfelt kan slik komme til nytte i andre, vidt forskjellige, emner. Ligningene svært vanskelig å løse, og i praksis søker en tilnærmede løsninger som finnes ved hjelp av datamaskiner.
