Iselin Åsedotter Strønen er førsteamanuensis i sosialantropologi og har lang feltarbeidserfaring fra Spania, Brasil, Venezuela og Angola. Hun er prosjektleder for INTPART-prosjektet Environmental Sustainability, Marine Economies and Gendered Socio-Economic Inequalities (ENMARINE): A Norway-Brazil Partnership in Research and Teaching (2020-2026), finansiert av Norges forskningsråd (NRC) og Direktoratet for høyere utdanning og ferdigheter (HK-dir).

Hennes forskningsinteresser inkluderer fiskeri- og havbruksantropologi, kvinner i fiskerisektoren, olje- og naturressursforvaltning, kjønn, sosiale bevegelser, politiske konflikter og statlige transformasjoner, ​​fattigdom og sosioøkonomiske ulikheter, og bedrifters samfunnsansvar (CSR).

I hennes pågående forskning gjør hun feltarbeid i det nordvestlige og nordlige Spania, med fokus på kvinners rolle i marine økonomier og fiskerisektorens kjønnede politiske økonomi, klima- og miljøforringelse, og konflikter mellom fiskeri og havvindutvikling.

Strønen har undervist i en rekke emner på BA-nivå ved Institutt for sosialantropologi siden 2015, og har også vært undervisningsleder i 2020-2021 og 2023. Siden 2018 har hun vært emneansvarlig for etter- og videreutdanningsemnet (EVU) Flerkulturell forståelse og kommunikasjon.

Strønen har tidligere vært med i forskningsprosjektet ENERGETHICS - Norwegian energy companies abroad.  Expanding the anthropological understanding of corporate social responsibility (2015-2019). Prosjektet var forankret ved Institutt for Sosialantropologi, UiB, og Chr. Michelsens Institutt (CMI), og ble finansiert av Norges Forskningsråd (NFR). Prosjektet fokuserer på Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) blant norske energiselskaper som opererer i utlandet. Strønen sitt case-studie handlet om Equinors CSR-arbeid i Brasil.

Hun har også vært prosjektmedlem i CEIC-CMI Angola-programmet (2015-2018) ved Chr. Michelsens Institutt (CMI), og var prosjektkoordinator for delprosjektet Gender Relations and Human Rights i Angola. Prosjektet ble finansiert av Den Kongelige Norske Ambassade i Luanda Hun har også fungert som prosjektkoordinator og redaktør for CMI-prosjektet Everyday Maneuvres: Military-Civilian Relations in Latin-America and the Middle East (2013-2016), finansiert av det norske Utenriksdepartementet, hvor hun også gjennomførte case-studier i Venezuela og Brasil.

Som PhD-kandidat var hun en del av forskningsprosjektet The Role of the Oil and Gas Industry in the Promotion of Poverty Reduction and Social Volatility (2008-2010, finansiert av Norges Forskningsråd (NRC). Doktorgradsarbeidet hennes fokuserte på grasrotbevegelser, staten og oljens betydning politisk og kulturelt i Venezuela. PhD-avhandlingen hennes ble videreutviklet til monografien Grassroots Politics and Oil Culture in Venezuela. The Revolutionary Petro-state (Palgrave McMillan 2017). Boken er tilgjengelig Open Access her.

Strønen disputerte for doktorgraden i sosialantropologi fra Universitetet i Bergen i 2014. Hun har også en MA-grad i Anthropology of Development fra Universitetet i Bergen (2006), og en MA-grad i internasjonal journalistikk fra City University, London (2008). Hun har vært førsteamanuensis i sosialantropologi siden 2020.

The People and the President: A portrait of the Bolivarian revolution (86min, 2007). A documentary by Iselin Strønen and Hildegunn Wærness. Based on my master’s thesis in Anthropology of Development, the film portrays the presidential elections in Venezuela in December 2006. Original language: Spanish, subtitled in English and Norwegian.
