Jan Skrobanek er professor ved Sosiologisk Institutt ved Universitet i Bergen. Hans forskningsfelt er etnisk identitet, diskriminering og etnisering, agency, mobilitet og migrasjon, sysselsetting samt utvikling av overgangsmønstre for marginalisert ungdom i et globalt perspektiv, internasjonal komparativ forskning og evaluering av intervensjonsprogrammer. Nyere publikasjoner omhandler ungdoms rusmiddelbruk, internasjonal mobilitet, diskriminering og etnisering i sammenheng med migrasjon, religiøse orienteringer og vellykkede / problematiske overganger fra skole til arbeid.

Jan Skrobanek har stått for utviklingen, opprettelse og undervisningen av en rekke kurs ved forskjellige universiteter både på bachelor-, master- og phd. nivået. Kursene / seminarene / forelesningene i sosiologi, ungdomssosiologi og (til en viss grad) sosialt arbeid har vært fokusert på ett eller flere av følgende emner:

- inter-kulturell sosiologi og utdanning

- skole, overgang og sosial ulikhet i et livsløpsperspektiv

- sosiologiske perspektiver på migrasjon, etniske minoriteter og identitet

- stereotypisering, diskriminering og etnisk separasjon i skole og fritid

- familiebakgrunn, familiestøtte og skoleprestasjoner

- analyse og evaluering av praksismodeller for integrering av marginalisert ungdommer i skole og arbeid

- utvikling av strategier for å overvinne sosial, kulturell og økonomisk ulikhet

- ungdoms agency i skole til skole, skole til yrkesopplæring og skole til arbeidsovergang

- substans og narkotikabruk og forklaringen av stoffbruk blant unge

- avanserte statistiske modeller og analyse

 

Hittil har han vært hoved- og b-veileder for 6 phd-prosjekter og for 21 masteroppgaver.
