Dr. Fernø focuses on the link between obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance, in particular inflammatory signaling in the adipose tissue. In healthy individuals, adipose tissue immune cells maintain metabolic homeostasis, whereas in the obese state, these immune cells may change to pro-inflammatory phenotypes that contributes to metabolic disturbances, such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Fernø and his group is looking at immune cell composition in different human adipose tissue depots and perform phenotypic and functional assessments of adipocytes, pre-adipocytes and various immune cell types, including adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs), natural killer (NK) cells, and T-cells. The group also investigate how tissue immune cell makeup is related to systemic markers of inflammation and metabolic disease and how these effects may be sex-specific. Fernø also has a research interest in hypothalamic regulation of appetite how this is affected by psychopharmacological medication.
