Kjell Arne Johansson jobber akademisk som professor i medisinsk etikk og vitenskapsfilosofi, Institutt for global helse og samfunnsmedisinske fag, Universitetet i Bergen og klinisk som lege i rus og avhengighetsmedisin, Avdeling for rusmedisin, Haukeland Universitetssykehus.
Kjell Arne Johansson har mange års erfaring med forskning på populasjonsetikk og med å utvikle nye metoder for rettferdig prioritering i global helse og ved å anvende dem på lav- og høyinntektsland. Hans hovedkompetanse er: populasjonsetikk og fordelingskonsekvenser av ulike typer helsetjeneser, inkludert økonomiske evalueringer, ulikhet i helse og finansiell risikobeskyttelse av helsehjelp. I løpet av de siste fem årene har hans forskningsfokus vært anvendt equity-modellering, som søker å forstå de bredere implikasjonene av forbedret dekning av helsetjenester ved å bruke matematiske befolkningsmodeller. Spesielt har han bidratt til tre equity-impact metoder: Utvidet kostnadseffektivitetsanalyse (ECEA), alvorlighetsgrad av sykdom og fordelingssensitive kostnadseffektivitetsanalyser (DCEA). Han leder International Society for Priorities in Health (ISPH).
Kjernekompetanse: klinisk etikk; økonomisk evaluering, inkludert CEA, ECEA og DCEA; global helse; helseprioriteringer, rusforskning.
Medisinsk etikk: Har undervist legestudenter ved Universitetet i Bergen på ulike nivå siden 2005 frem til nå. Tema for kursene er blant annet klinisk etikk, helseprioriteringer, forskningsetikk, etiske prinsipper og etisk teori, sosial ulikhet i helse, global helse, kommunikasjon, evidensbasert medisin og "Health Technology Assesments"
Global Helse: Sammen med Ingrid Miljeteig og Nina Langeland utviklet vi et 6 mnd global helse kurs for legestudenter (både teori og utveksling til et lav-/middel- inntektsland). Kurset er tverrfaglig og fikk prisen for beste kurs på Universitetet i Bergen i 2011 (Ugleprisen). Jeg underviser på dette kurset fortsatt i globale helseprioriteringer og ulikhet i helse.
I tillegg har jeg flere undervisningsoppdrag på ulike kurs for leger og andre yrkesgrupper i etikk innenfor tema som global helse, autonomi, assistert befruktning, abort, HIV, flyktninger og kommunikasjon.
