Matthias Kaiser er professor emeritus ved Senter for vitskapsteori (SVT) ved Universitetet i Bergen og professor II ved NTNU i Trondheim. Han har studert ved Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Universitetet i Oslo, Stanford University og Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. Kaiser forskar på vitskapsteori, vitskapsetikk og teknologivurdering, og han er ekspert innan vitskapsfilosofi (Dr.phil.), vitskapsetikk og teknologivurdering. Han er også Affiliated Fellow ved Koi Tū Centre for Informed Futures ved University of Auckland.

Matthias ble født i Leipizig i Tyskland, som på den tiden fremdeles var kommunistisk. Heldigvis flyktet foreldrene hans til Vest-Tyskland kort tid før Berlinmuren ble reist. Der var han flyktning! Selv om han nettopp hadde startet på skolen ble han, på bakgrunn av denne opplevelsen med en veldig annerledes kultur og regime, skeptisk til alle såkalte autoriteter.  Med andre ord ble han filosof i ung alder.

Etter videregående skole, der han hovedsakelig tok naturvitenskap og matematikk, ønsket han å studere noe annet, så han studerte filosofi. Men allerede i løpet av andre semester fant han ut at han ikke kunne studere filosofi uten en god forståelse av logikk, og det førte ham til matematikkstudiet. I oppgaven sin ønsket han å kombinere filosofi og logikk, så dermed dro han til Norge, der han hadde noen gode professorer. Nå var han også innvandrer! Han begynte å interessere seg for studiet av vitenskapene, og var både fascinert av teoriene og samtidig forundret over hvordan vitenskap ble misbrukt i politikken. Han begynte å stille spørsmål om etikk i vitenskap, noe som gjorde ham upopulær i visse kretser.

Nå er det ingen spor av logikk igjen i ham, alt handler om tvetydighet og usikkerhet, i vitenskapen som i livet. Videre er han dypt forvirret når det gjelder verdier og stiller spørsmålstegn ved sine egne, men mest ved andre menneskers verdier, spesielt akademikere. Livet hans har blitt post-normalt, og han synes dette er et godt grunnlag for arbeid i det vitenskapelig-politiske grensesnittet.

Ellers har han skrevet en thriller på tysk ("Die Risikomanager") og en samling av selvbiografiske noveller, (“Talk, Eat, and See the World”), han liker å lage mat til andre, og han spiller elektrisk bluesbass. Politisk er han en beinhard liberal europeer på sin hals!
