Mette Vesterhus er overlege ved Haraldsplass Diakonale sykehus og spesialist i fordøyelsessykdommer, med spesiell interesse for leversykdommer. Hun er for tiden leder for Norsk Gastroenterologisk Forening (NGF) og for NGFs Interessegruppe for leversykdommer, som bl.a. arrangerer det årlige Nasjonalt levermøte. Hun disputerte i 2009 og er ansatt i 50% stilling som førsteamanuensis ved UiB. Forskningen hennes fokuserer på autoimmune leversykdommer, med særlig vekt på biomarkører for fibrose, og for sykdomsaktivitet og prognose ved primær skleroserende cholangitt. Hun er prosjektleder for Nasjonalt nettverk for autoimmune leversykdommer.
