Forskningsinteressene er konsentrert rundt forbindelser fra naturen - først og fremst antocyaner og andre flavonoider.

Vi har som mål å finne nye forbindelser, forstå kjemiske egenskaper til naturstoffer (likevektsformer, stereokjemi, stabilitet), få frem potensielle farmasøytiske effekter, utvikle metodikk til isolering og strukturoppklaring, tilrettelegge for utvidet bruk av naturlige fargestoffer i matvarer, utvikle patenter, etc. Vi analyserer prøver fra alle kontinent.

For tiden arbeider vi blant annet på EU-prosjektet MUTHI - Building Sustainable Research Capacity on Plants for Better Public Health in Africa i samarbeid med universitet i Amsterdam, Bamako, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Kampala, Oslo og Oxford.

Vi har sammen med tidligere studenter i gruppen og andre samarbeidspartnere startet bedrifter.

Masteroppgaver blir gitt innen følgende områder:

Masteroppgavene kan klassifiseres under naturstoffkjemi, analytisk kjemi, organisk kjemi, farmakognosi, og ernæring. Oppgavene er konsentrert rundt forbindelser fra naturen.

En typisk oppgave vil omhandle antocyaner og andre flavonoider. Prosjektene involverer isolering vha en rekke kromatografiske teknikker, og fullstendig strukturoppklaring blant annet vha avanserte spektroskopiske teknikker som NMR spektroskopi  og høy-oppløselig massespektrometri.

Isolerte og semisyntetiserte forbindelser blir analysert med et eller flere av følgende mål:

• Å finne nye forbindelser i naturen.

• Utvikle metodikk til isolering og strukturoppklaring av naturstoffer.

• Forstå kjemiske egenskaper til naturstoffer (likevektsformer, stereokjemi, stabilitet).

• Å få frem potensielle farmasøytiske effekter til naturstoffer/legemidler.

• Å utvikle patenter.
