Norsk Sentralforvaltning i et 30-års perspektiv

Per Lægreid er utdannet cand. polit. med hovedfag i administrasjon og organisasjonsvitenskap ved universitetet i Bergen og avla dr.philos.-graden samme sted i 1990. Fra 1980 har han arbeidet ved Institutt for administrasjon og organisasjonsvitenskap, siden 1992 som professor. Fra 1993 til 1995 var han instituttstyrer. I årene 1987-2001 var Lægreid tilnyttet LOS-senteret. Siden 2002 har Lægreid også vært tilknyttet Rokkansenteret som forsker og forskningsleder.

I sin forskning har Lægreid særlig beskjeftiget seg med studier av offentlig forvaltning, i særdeleshet sentraladministrasjonen, administrative reformer, forvaltningspolitikk og institusjonell endring, i norsk, nordisk og europeisk perspektiv. Han har videre vært opptatt av problemstillinger knyttet til flernivåstyring, og utfordringer for demokratisk styring og kontroll. Lægreid har en svært omfattende vitenskapelig produksjon innenfor disse emnene.

Lægreid har vært sentral i internasjonal organisasjonsforskning. Han vært medlem av styret i Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (Scancor) ved Stanford University i USA. Han er gjesteprofessor ved Copenhagen Business School, har hatt  fellowship ved Karholike Universiteit, Leuven og har i flere perioder hatt forskningsopphold ved Stanford University. Han har vært medredaktør av Scandinavian Political Studies og sitter som redaksjonsmedlem i flere internasjonale tidsskrifter. Han har også verv i European Group of Public Adminsitration (EGPA) og i International Political Science Association (IPSA). I 2007 ble Lægreid innvalgt som medlem i Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi,
