Jeg forsker i skjæringspunktet mellom rett og politikk med hovefokus på "lawfare" bruken av rettsmobilisering som politisk strategi og domstolene som arena for omstridte politiske spørsmål som klima, abort og LHBT-rettigheter. Forskningen er knyttet til LawTransform ( CMI-UiB Centre on Law & Social Transformation) som jeg leder. Senteret er et samarbeid mellom Universitetet i Bergen og Chr. Michelsens Institutt og omfatter en rekke internasjonale og tverrvitenskapelige prosjekter for forskning om rettens samfunnsmessige virkninger. Empirisk fokus for min egen forskning er i hovedsak Afrika (Sør-Afrika, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia) men jeg har også ledet flere tverr-regionale studier (Latin-Amerika, Afrika, Asia, Europa) og jobber også noe med norske forhold. Jeg er opptatt av hvordan retten brukes til å oppnå sosiale og politiske målsetninger, både "nedenfra" (gjennom at individer og grupper mobliserer rund rettigheter i og utenfor rettsapparatet), "overfra" (fra den politiske ledelsen, gjennom grunnlovsutvikling, lovgivning og utvikling/begrensning av rettsinstitusjoner). og "innenfra" (gjennom domstolsaktivisme). Jeg er oppttatt av hvordan ulike samfunn kan utvikle institusjoner for ansvarsutkrevning som bidrar til å bygge godt styresett og demokrati - blant annet i fohold til å sikre rettferdige valgprosesser. Et spørsmål jeg har forsket mye på er hvordan sosiale rettigheter kan håndheves av rettsapparatet og hvordan det påviker sosialpolitikk og soaial rettferdighet, for eksempel når det gjelder helse. I forlengelsen av dette er jeg opptatt av hvordan rettsinstitusjoner brukes for å fremme en mer ansvarlig miljø- og klimapolitikk. Jeg har tidligere forsket på forsoningsprosesser (sannhetskommisjoner, overgangsrettferdighet), politisk teori (særlig knyttet til sosial rettferdighet) og også opptatt av nye former for politiske deltakelse.
