Mozambique
I have been working with Mozambican colleagues since the middle of the 1980’s. The most important income in foreign currency for Mozambique is the shrimp fisheries on the Sofala Bank. We found that the catch rates were influenced by the Zambezi River run-off, and that the regulation of the River had a negative influence on the fisheries. We have also studied the oceanography in the Mozambican Channel which is dominated by large anti-cyclonic eddies.

Atlantic El NINO

Did you know that there is a NINO type oscillation in the Atlantic? It is termed Benguela Nino and seems to appear every 11th year. It was first mapped in 1995 with RV 'DR. Fridtjof Nansen'.   

Ny skole i Marine fag etablert i Mosambik.

Via NOMA programmet (2008-2014) ble det opprettet et nytt Masterstudium i marine fag ved School of Marine Sciences som ble lokalisert til Quelimane. Denne skolen, som ligger ved kysten i det sentrale Mosambik , er tilknyttet Universidade Eduardo Mondlane. Fram til 2014 har 25 tatt Mastergrad, 13 jenter og 12 gutter. De fleste har fått relevante jobber i offentlig sektor eller privat industri i Mosambik. Veiledere fra Geofysen har vært Eva Falck, Tor Gammelsrød, Øyvind Breivik, Rasmus Kulseng, Svein Sundby og Torbjørn Taskjelle. Dessuten har Kai Christensen, Meteorologisk Institutt i Oslo spilt en viktig rolle bl.a. ved å bidra i 3 feltekspedisjoner i Mosambik.

The International Polar Year 2007- 2008

Several scientific expeditions were performed both in the Arctic and Antarctic. Model work and laboratory experiment were also applied to understand better the Ocean Circulation and the Global Cimate.  A summary (in Norwegian) is found here
