Forsker på systemet av mikroorganismer i havet (alger, protozooer, bakterier og virus). Interessert i sammenhengen mellom enkeltorganismenes strategier for konkurranse og forsvar og hvordan disse er med og genererer og oppprettholder kompleksiteten i denne delen av økosystemet. Har jobbet spesielt med P-syklus. Arbeider med eksperimentelle modellsystemer, mesokosmer og teoriutvikling/matematisk modellering.
