The main research of professor Johannessen has been directed towards reproductive biology and recruitment studies of fish. His main interest is field oriented and concerns population biology of herring and processes and mechanisms involved in  maintaining population structure. Processes governing selection of spawning sites, spawning behaviour, migrations and early life history are integrated components of this work. His research is recently linked with studies on the local herring population in the marine ecosystem “Mare Minimum” in Lindaaspollene, Nordhordland, western Norway.

Prof. Johannessen  has also expertise in fisheries ecology of the northeast Atlantic and fish population biology in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea.

Mare Minimum – a small natural ecosystem for experimental studies.

Lindåspollene is a small (about 7 km2) well-defined ecosystem in western Norway. A narrow sill (7.5 m wide, 3.5 m deep) leads from the Lurefjord into the enclosed fjord system, which comprises three distinct, 60-90 m basins. A general description of the topography, hydrography and the diverse biota of Lindåspollene is given in Dahl et al., (1973). The environment within the basins differs from the Lurefjord with regard to temperature, salinity and oxygen as well as species abundance, species assemblages and diversity of food items (Dahl et al., 1973; Lie et al., 1978). The local Lindås herring is generally not commercially exploited and represents a key species in terms of ecological importance (Langård et al., 2006; Johannessen et al 2009).

Lindåspollene has been part of a research program initiated in 1961 (the Herring Committee of the International Council of Ocean Research in Copenhagen). There is also available historical reliable and valuable documentation, which can be used as a scientific reference database for comparison purposes (Lie et al., 1978). In addition, during the 1970s the University of Bergen (UoB) conducted two large research projects in Nordhordland: the multi-purpose Lindås project (1971-76) regarding the coastal cultural landscape, and the marine biological project regarding the enclosed herring population and its environment in Lindåspollene (1971-1980). These projects created a great baseline of knowledge in Nordhordland, which has provided a valuable starting point for new research projects, education, public outreach and tourism possibilities.

Using the extensive information from the historical studies that has been conducted, Lindåspollene will be used as a reference area, and based on the information gathered will be applied to historical and new studies of local coastal populations along the Norwegian coast - a comparative approach in order to determine population structures/potential mixing of different populations along the Norwegian coast.
