The book is a restudy of a particular village in Bangladesh. The original study was carried out in the late 1970s and the restudy in the period from 2010 to 2016. The book presents the remarkable transformation in the rural economy of Bangladesh during the last decades. From being one of the poorest countries in the world, Bangladesh will soon be a middle income country.

Eirik G. Jansen has a Dr. Philos degree in social anthropology and worked as research fellow at CMI from 1975 to 1990. He has published several books on Bangladesh. Later he has worked many years in East African both as a researcher and an aid administrator.
