Hovedinteressene mine er:
1) I hvilken grad er ikke-invasive metoder for hjernestimulering en virksom behandling for psykiske og nevrologiske lidelser? Transkraniell magnetisk stimulering (TMS) og transkraniell direkte strømstimulering (tDCS) blir mer og mer brukt for behandling av depresjon, schizofreni, hjerneslag og andre psykiske og nevrologiske lidelser. Likevel vet vi ganske lite om i hvilken grad disse metodene faktisk hjelper pasientene, og hvilke nevrologiske prosesser det er som danner grunnlaget for virkningen av ikke-invasiv hjernestimulering.

2) Hvordan oppstår kognitive kjønnsforskjeller? Vanligvis finner vi ingen, eller bare små, forskjeller i den kognitive kapasiteten til kvinner og menn. Likevel har kvinner en bedre verbal hukommelse, mens menn har en bedre romoppfatning. I denne sammenhengen fokuserer en del av forskningen min på hvordan ulike biologiske faktorer (f.eks. seksualhormoner, gener), sosiale faktorer (f.eks. stereotyper relatert til kjønn) OG psykologiske faktorer (f.eks. selvtillit) påvirker utviklingen av kognitive kjønnsforskjeller.   

3) Hva er fordelen av hemisfærisk spesialisering? Begrepet «hemisfærisk spesialisering» brukes til å beskrive at hver av våre to hjernehalvdeler er spesialisert for forskjellige funksjoner. For eksempel ligger språkevnene våre hovedsakelig i den venstre hemisfæren, mens vi gjenkjenner personer (ansikter) ved bruk av den høyre hemisfæren. Men hvorfor er det sånn? Hvorfor er de fleste av oss høyre- og ikke venstrehendte? Og hvilken rolle spiller evolusjonen her?  

Hemisfærisk spesialisering er også det som forbinder de ulike forskningsinteressene mine: Det finnes en teori at kognitive kjønnsforskjeller oppstår fordi menn har en sterkere hemisfærisk spesialisering enn kvinner. Den mer «asymmetriske» hjerneorganisasjonen hos menn virker å forsterke romoppfatningen, mens den mer «symmetriske» kvinnelige hjernen trolig forsterker språklige evner. Pasienter med depresjon og schizofreni viser ofte en redusert eller omvendt hemisfærisk spesialisering. Og hvis én av hemisfærene blir rammet av hjerneslag, tror noen forskere at den andre hemisfæren først må bli hemmet før hjernen kan rehabilitere seg. Metoder som TMS eller tDCS gjør det mulig å hemme eller stimulere spesifikke hjerneområder.

I samarbeid med Nevrokirurgisk Avdeling ved Haukeland universitetssykehus bruker jeg TMS for å lokalisere regioner i hjernen som er ansvarlige for motoriske funksjoner i pasienter med hjernesvulster - et arbeid som hjelper nevrologer å planlegge og forbedre nevrokirurgiske inngrep. 

Jeg er leder av FLaSH-gruppen (ForskningsLab for Stimulering av Hjernen). Støttet av Det psykologiske fakultet og Bergens Forskningsstiftelse er vårt hovedmål å undersøke om tDCS er en virksom behandling for hørselshallusinasjoner i pasienter med schizofreni og hva de underliggende nevronale mekanismene av behandlingen er. FLaSH-gruppen er tilknyttet Bergen fMRI-gruppen.

    Ved Universitetet i Bergen er jeg ansvarlig for “PSYK207: Læring og atferdspsykologi» og delvis ansvarlig for «PSYK250: Bacheloroppgave i generell psykologi». Oppgavene mine inneholder blant annet å holde forelesninger og seminarer, sensurere eksamener og veilede både Bachelor-, Master-, Emne- og Hovedoppgaver.

    I tillegg hadde jeg ansvar for flere Bachelor- og Masterkurs og –studenter ved Ruhr-Universitetet Bochum (Tyskland, mellom 2006-2007) og Universitetet i Durham (Storbritannia, mellom 2007-2011).

    Hjernestimulering og mentale/nevrologiske lidelser
    I 2016 begynte STOPP STEMMER prosjektet, finansiert gjennom eksellensmidler fra Det psykologiske fakultet og Bergens Forskningsstiftelse. Formålet av prosjektet var å finne ut om er å transkraniell direkte strømstimulering (tDCS) kan brukes til å redusere hørselshallusinasjoner hos pasienter med schizofreni. Første, foreløpige resultater kan leses her. Jeg fortsetter med arbeid rundt hvordan vi kan bruke elektrisk hjernestimulering som er smertefri og krever ingen anestesi for å hjelpe individer med mentale og nevrologiske lidelser.

    Kjønn og Kognisjon
    Sammen med fagmiljø fra UiBs Senter for Kvinne- og Kjønnsforskning (Norge), Universitet i Durham (Storbritannia) og Universitet i Padova (Italia) gjennomfører vi en del studier for å finne ut på hvilken måte kognitive kjønnsforskjeller utvikler seg. For eksempel: Hvordan påvirker ulike kjønnsrelaterte stereotyper romoppfatning og verbale evner? Finnes det forskjeller i kjønnsrelaterte stereotyper mellom ulike land og ulike studiefag (for eksempel naturfag versus sosialfag)? 

    Farger og følelser
    Sammen med Lynn Marquardt fra UiB og andre internasjonale samarbeidspartnere undersøker vi på hvilken måte vi forbinder visse farger med spesifikke følelser og om det finnes likheter og forskjeller mellom ulike land og folk. Her forklarer Lynn prosjektet i et radiointervju (14.4.2016, "Morgen med Radio Hordaland"). Arbeidet er ledet av Universitetet i Lausanne (Sveits).
