Real is a pioneer and international top-expert of research investigating the link between sex hormones, reproductive and metabolic factors and early life factors for respiratory health and disease, pioneering the field through his PhD and postdoctoral work. His PhD student and postdoctoral researcher, AI Triebner, led recent papers showing menopause is related to new onset asthma and accelerated lung function decline (published in leading respiratory and allergy journals). He collaborates in these fields with the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe (RHINE), the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS), Tasmanian Health Survey (TAHS), the Swiss cohort study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults (SAPALDIA), the UK Bio Bank, the PregMet study, and the transgenerational Respiratory Health In Northern Europe, Spain and Australia (RHINESA) cohorts. Real´s main strengths as a scientist are original and innovative thinking, excellent network building capacity and extensive experience with research administration. This is reflected in papers that have contributed to paradigm shift.
