Paulo Oliveira: Translation Memories and the Paradox of Understanding

Abstract

Is there the one correct reading of a text and the adequate translation of it? While philosophical disputes sometimes turn around this idea of the correct, only possible or best rendering per se, translation software relies on the concept of invariance in technical texts to build up their memories and semi-automatize the process. Both the theoretical construct and the technology-based praxis underestimate the role of the understanding subject in reading and translating. However, even being based on very short, decontextualized text excerpts, translation memories seem to function satisfactorily, as their use in technical and commercial translations is widespread and continues to grow. How is this possible? The presentation addresses this issue from the perspective of linguistic and philosophical pragmatics and suggests possible bridges between Wittgenstein’s later philosophy and translation studies proper.
