Abstract:

One of the most important abilities of teams involved in translational research is the capacity to recognize how a line of study in one field might impact a seemingly unrelated area.  This “paradigm translation” – the mental flexibility to stretch conceptual understanding of one disease process across a chasm to imagine how it might relate to another field – can be a tool that facilitates major advances in biomedical research.

In this seminar, we will build on previous work that implicates a class of molecules – axonal guidance factors (AGFs) – in tumor development and highlight the thought process that led to investigating their role in a totally different field; stroke. Ultimately, the cross-pollination between benchtop scientists and full-time clinicians led to a unique insight that a shared biological mechanism might be pathologic in one disease process - and helpful in another, seemingly unrelated, disease.

Short bio:

Dr. Smith is a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School, the R. Michael Scott Chair in Neurosurgery at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular Surgery and Interventions Center. Dr. Smith’s training included an undergraduate education at Dartmouth College, medical school at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital, pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at the Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School program and and NIH-funded postdoctoral training in the Vascular Biology Program with
Dr. Marsha Moses.

He currently heads a translational research laboratory in the Vascular Biology Program  with a focus on the development of non-invasive biomarkers and novel therapeutics for pediatric brain tumors and stroke.  Along with Dr. Darren Orbach, leads one of the largest pediatric cerebrovascular programs in the country, with a dedicated team focused on improving the outcomes of patients with moyamoya, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and cavernous malformations.

All interested researchers, students and others are welcome!
